Teacher Appreciation Week has a way of arriving right after the busiest stretch of the spring, and a lot of PTAs end up planning it the week before. The good news is that a week is plenty of time if you pick five things and do them well.

We think the week works best when teachers get a real break, a real treat, and a thank-you with their name on it, and none of that requires a mountain of swag. Here is a plan an Austin PTA can run in a week.

When is Teacher Appreciation Week 2027, and why is it easy to miss?

Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week of May every year, and it is easy to miss because it lands right after spring break, STAAR testing, and field trip season.

According to the NEA, the week was officially established by the National Education Association in 1985, and its roots go back to 1953, when Eleanor Roosevelt encouraged Congress to set aside a day for teachers. National Teacher Day is always the Tuesday of that week. In 2026 the week ran May 4 through 8, and National PTA has the 2027 week down as May 2 through 8, which puts the school days on Monday, May 3 through Friday, May 7, with National Teacher Day on Tuesday, May 4.

National PTA has designated one week in May for teachers since 1984, and it publishes a free Celebration Toolkit every year with thank-you cards, certificates, flyers, and coloring pages in English and Spanish. The 2027 theme is "How Sweet it is to Bee Taught By You," and the hashtag is #ThankATeacher. If you are starting late, the toolkit is your first download.

What do teachers want during Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teachers want time, food they did not have to pack, and to be noticed by name.

NEA surveyed 1,000 educators around Teacher Appreciation Week 2026 and found that more than a third named better pay as the most meaningful form of appreciation, with 77 percent saying higher wages would significantly improve their daily lives. A PTA cannot fix salaries. What a PTA can do is make the week feel like the school noticed, which is the part a PTA can control.

Translate that into a week:

• Give them a break. Cover a recess duty, stock the lounge, set up a quiet corner.
• Feed them. One real lunch, eaten sitting down, goes a long way.
• Say it with a name. A note from a student that says one specific thing is the gift they keep.
• Do not add work. No forms, no sign-ups, no extra meetings after school.

What's a day-by-day plan a PTA can pull off in a week?

The plan is one theme per day, one parent in charge of each, and one bigger moment mid-week.

Wednesday is the mid-week moment on purpose. It gives the week a lift in the middle instead of front-loading everything on Monday, and a cold drink at 11:40 is an easy break to fit between classes.

How do you pull off Teacher Appreciation Week on three different budgets?

You pull it off by deciding the tier first, then building the week to fit, instead of totaling the bill at the end.

Tier one: nearly free. PTO Today's free-ideas list is the playbook here. Ask volunteers to bring patio furniture and plants for an outdoor "oasis" teachers can use during breaks. Send students in with appreciation slips. Set up an appreciation station where families write cards. Run a cookie bar stocked by parents. Ask nearby coffee shops and restaurants for donations. All of it costs paper and postage.

Tier two: one big moment. Keep the free stuff and add one thing you pay for. For a lot of PTAs that is either a catered lunch or a drink bar in the lounge. Pick the one your teachers would talk about in the parking lot.

Tier three: the full week. Free stuff, the catered lunch, the soda bar, and a Friday family social. This is the tier where the fundraiser angle matters, because the Friday event can pay for part of the week.

How does a dirty soda bar in the teachers' lounge work?

It works because teachers have ten minutes, not an hour, and a drink bar is a ten-minute treat.

Dirty soda

A dirty soda is a fountain soda (Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite, root beer) dressed up with flavored syrups, cream or coconut cream, fresh fruit, and sometimes a cap of vanilla cold foam. Every drink is alcohol-free, which is why it fits a school day (more on what a dirty soda is).

The rhythm of a school day is the whole design problem. Teachers do not get a lunch hour; they get a lunch wave, a conference period, and a walk to the copier. So the bar cannot be a 12:00 to 1:00 thing. It has to be open from the first wave to the last.

A few things we plan around in a lounge:

• Include everyone. Custodians, cafeteria staff, the front office, bus drivers if they are on campus. "Teacher" week should mean staff week.
• Post the menu on the lounge door the day before. Teachers plan their ten minutes. Give them something to look forward to.
• Let a student council rep hand out the first drink. It makes a nice photo for the school's page.

Can Teacher Appreciation Week double as a fundraiser?

Yes, if the fundraiser is the Friday family social and the teachers are the guests, not the workers.

The idea is simple. Friday after school, families come to the playground or the cafeteria. The PTA sells tickets or takes donations at the door, the soda bar is the draw, and teachers drink free. Families get a fun hour, the school gets a boost toward next year's budget, and teachers end the week being celebrated in front of their students.

Two rules keep it from backfiring:

1. Teachers never pay and never work. If a teacher ends up behind a table, it has stopped being an appreciation event.
2. Keep it short. An hour to ninety minutes after dismissal. Friday afternoons in May are hot and everyone is tired.

What are the mistakes to avoid during Teacher Appreciation Week?

The mistakes are the ones that turn appreciation into a task: sign-up sheets, events after contract hours, and a week that only reaches a few classrooms.

• Asking teachers to RSVP. Just show up with it.
• Scheduling after 4 p.m. Teachers have kids, second jobs, and grading. NEA's survey found more than half of educators surveyed hold more than one job.
• Forgetting specials and support staff. Music, PE, art, SPED, aides, office, custodial. If the bar is in the lounge, make sure they know it is for them.
• Gifts that create clutter. Treats, notes, and time are easier to appreciate than another mug.
• A week that fizzles. If Monday is huge and Friday is nothing, the week ends flat. Save something good for Friday.

How do you book a soda bar for a school in Austin?
